What to Expect at Chess Club

St. Lucas Chess Club will take place most Fridays starting October and concluding in April.  Please check out our schedule for specific dates of events.  Kindergarten through 8th grade are invited to participate.  Parents and other adults are welcome to stay and learn or help teach.  St. Lucas Congregation members are welcome to come and play any time (pending a background check).

 

Attendance

Although attendance is encouraged, weekly attendance is not required to become a chess club member.  Drop in anytime!    

 

Level of Chess Knowledge

Chess club with be broken up into two groups (maybe more). 

Basics – those learning how the pieces move.

Tactics – those learning strategy.

 

Tournaments

Children have an opportunity to compete against other schools as a team.  Trophies are awards to top point obtainers.  Metals are usually awarded to participants.  Most tournaments are Saturdays and attendance is not required. 

Discovery World hosts an exciting chess tournament every year.  Admission to the museum is included with registration to the tournament. 

Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School will also host a chess tournament this year.

Dates will be posted closer to the start of the season.    

 

Curriculum

Chesskids.com has many fun resources and videos teaching basic principles and strategies of chess.  Students are encouraged to set up a free account so they are able to play against other children.  For more information check out the link below.

Snack

Snacks will be provided for children.  A pizza party will kick off the first chess lesson of the season.      

 

Prizes

A trophy will be awarded to the top tournament point earner at the end of the chess season.  Awards will also be handed out to those showing diligence and good sportsmanship throughout the chess season.
